M3U vs M3U8: What's the Difference and Which Should You Use?

April 28, 2026·4 min read

When your streaming service provider sends you a playlist link, it will often end in either .m3u or .m3u8. Both formats look similar and work in Mi Player, but they have some meaningful technical differences worth understanding.

What is M3U?

M3U stands for MP3 URL — originally it was created to create playlists for MP3 audio files. Over time, the format was adopted for video streaming playlists. An M3U file is a plain text file that lists the URLs of media streams, along with metadata like channel names and logos.

What is M3U8?

M3U8 is simply the UTF-8 encoded version of M3U. The "8" refers to UTF-8 character encoding, which supports international characters, accents, and non-Latin alphabets. This makes M3U8 more widely compatible across international streaming services. It is also the format used by Apple's HLS (HTTP Live Streaming) protocol — making it the modern standard for adaptive bitrate streaming.

Which Should You Use?

In practice, use whichever URL your streaming provider gives you. Mi Player supports both formats natively. If you have a choice, M3U8 is generally preferred as it offers better compatibility with modern streaming protocols and international content.

Quick rule: Both work perfectly in Mi Player. Don't stress over the format — just paste the URL from your provider and you're good to go.
